Long COVID Explained: Why Some Recover (and Others Don’t)
Many people who have recovered from COVID find themselves facing a new challenge: they don’t feel like themselves anymore.
Fatigue lingers. Brain fog sets in. Energy levels drop. And for some, it feels like their body just isn’t functioning the way it used to.
This is what we commonly refer to as long COVID.
One of the key drivers behind these symptoms is dysfunction in what we call the MILA system—the mitochondria, immune, and lymphatic axis. This system is responsible for how your body produces energy, communicates internally, and defends itself.
When MILA becomes overwhelmed, things begin to break down. Cells stop communicating effectively. Hormones are produced and utilized improperly. Neurotransmitters are affected. The result is a body that feels stuck and unable to fully recover.
A major piece of this puzzle is the lymphatic system.
Most people think of the lymphatic system as simply moving fluid, but it plays a much bigger role. It helps remove cellular debris and, more importantly, educates your immune system. After a prolonged immune response—like fighting COVID—this system can become congested and less responsive.
When lymphatic flow slows down, the immune system can struggle to regulate itself properly. This contributes to the lingering symptoms many people experience.
The encouraging news is that this system can be restored.
By supporting lymphatic movement—through hydration, physical activity, and targeted care—you can help your body reset. As lymphatic flow improves, the immune system begins to respond appropriately again. Mitochondrial function improves, leading to better energy production.
Over time, this can lead to a significant reduction—or even resolution—of long-haul COVID symptoms.
